Should I Step Back From My Business in Midlife or Push Through?
Neither, yet ~ the binary is the trap. Pushing through uses an override your body is no longer issuing. Stepping back, decided from exhaustion, is a choice you will likely revisit with regret. The third option is to find out whether this is a capacity problem or an alignment problem, because they need opposite responses.
The two problems look identical from inside
Both feel like I cannot keep doing this. That is why women get it wrong.
A capacity problem means the work is still right and the load is wrong. You want to be doing this; there is simply too much of it landing on you, and the energy that used to absorb the overflow is no longer reliable.
An alignment problem means the load is survivable and the work is wrong. You could carry it. You do not want to. The thought of three more years of exactly this is what makes you tired, not the hours.
Push through an alignment problem and you get a woman who hits her numbers and feels nothing. Step back from a capacity problem and you give away work you loved.
How to tell which one you have
Do this on paper, not in your head. Your head will protect the status quo.
List everything you did last week. Everything ~ the calls, the admin, the fires, the thing you do every Thursday that nobody asked for. Then mark each one: energizing, neutral, or draining.
Now look at the draining column and ask of each line: is this draining because there is too much of it, or because it is not mine?
Capacity problems cluster. You will see one overloaded function and a great deal of volume.
Alignment problems scatter. The draining items will be spread across the week, and they will share a theme ~ a client type you have outgrown, a role you keep playing, work you took on to be seen a certain way.
If it is capacity
Then the answer is structural and it is not about your worth.
Hire before you think you can. Cut the revenue line that costs the most energy per dollar, even if it is profitable on paper ~ energy is now a real line item and it was always being spent, you just were not counting it. Put the thing you do best at the center and build the rest of the week around protecting it.
And notice the resistance that comes up when you try. For most women it is not logistical. It is the belief that the business only works because she carries it. That belief is expensive and it is usually not true.
If it is alignment
Then more rest will not fix it, and neither will a bigger goal.
This is where the work gets deeper, and where I would want to be in the room with you. Because alignment problems in midlife are almost never about the business. They are about what the business has been doing for your identity ~ and what happens when it stops.
The question is not do I keep this. It is what was I using this to prove, and to whom.
Answer that honestly and the decision about the business frequently makes itself. Often the answer is not to leave. It is to keep the work and put down the proving ~ which looks, from the outside, like the same business run by a different woman.
Why not to decide this month
Decisions made from depletion have a signature. They are binary, they are urgent, and they are about escape rather than direction.
If you are there right now, the honest move is not to choose. It is to stabilize first ~ sleep, medical support, take three things off the week ~ and then decide from a body that has something in the tank. The decision you make in six weeks will be a better decision, and you will not have to undo it.
This is not procrastination. It is refusing to let exhaustion run your strategy.
What expansion looks like here
What feels like the end of your capacity is frequently the end of one model of working, not the end of your ambition.
The women I coach through this do not shrink their businesses. Most of them simplify and then grow ~ fewer offers, better clients, a week they actually designed. They stop running a business that requires them to be a certain kind of woman, and start running one that fits the woman they are becoming.
That is not stepping back. That is building on purpose.
If you want help telling them apart
This is the exact work of one-to-one coaching with me ~ the business problem and the identity question underneath it, in the same conversation, which is the only way either one gets solved.
The Reclaim Room is the door most women come through first. Live coaching, the Reclaim Pathway, and a room of women running real things who are done pretending it is fine.
You do not have to choose between your business and yourself. That choice was always a false one.
