Not Broken, Carrying: Why Success Feels So Heavy in Midlife
She closed the quarter strong. Again.
The numbers landed. The team is fine. The calendar is full of things she said yes to, and she will show up for every one of them.
And on the drive home, she sits in the garage for ten minutes before she goes inside. Not because anything is wrong. Because she can't find the energy to walk in and be needed one more time tonight.
If that's you, I want you to hear this first.
You are not broken. You are carrying.
Twenty years of carrying
Most of the women I work with didn't arrive at midlife tired. They arrived at midlife having carried something ~ the team, the household, the business, the parents, the version of themselves that never dropped a ball ~ for twenty years without setting it down.
Most of it, she didn't choose. She accumulated it, one reasonable yes at a time.
Then perimenopause arrives, and the carrying gets heavier. Sleep shifts. Patience thins. The things that used to run on adrenaline stop running.
And the instinct, for a woman who achieved her way here, is to fix it. Tighten the morning routine. Push through the afternoon. Achieve her way out of an exhaustion that achievement built.
It doesn't work. Not because she isn't trying hard enough. Because she's trying to solve an alignment problem with more achievement.
Two layers, not one
When a woman tells me she doesn't feel like herself anymore, there are usually two things going on underneath.
The first is identity. The roles she built her life around ~ the capable one, the closer, the one everyone leans on ~ no longer fit the woman she's becoming. That's what the Reclaim Pathway is for: five shifts that move you from the roles you built around performance back to who you are underneath. Identity over Performance. Reconnection over Fixing. Expansion over Breakdown. Alignment over Achievement. Truth over Pressure. It's a circle, not a staircase. You start with the one that sounds like you.
The second is weight. Some of what she carries doesn't respond to insight. She understands it. She's named it. She could explain it to anyone. And it still runs underneath everything ~ the reflex to hold it all together, the old belief that rest has to be earned. That's where release work comes in. Mental & Emotional Release® and the Release Point Method™ are guided processes that help stored emotional weight let go, without reliving the past.
The Pathway helps you see what's shifting. Release work helps your body let go of what it's still holding.
This week: the Alignment Audit
This week in the Reclaim Room, we're working with Alignment over Achievement. Achievement asks one question: did I do it well? You've never once failed it. Alignment asks something else: did I want to be doing it at all?
The practice is the Alignment Audit, and it starts with your calendar.
Print last week. On paper, not on a screen ~ a screen lets you scroll past the thing you don't want to look at.
Go block by block and ask: who chose this? You now, or a version of you with reasons that have expired? Would you say yes today?
Put one dot next to anything you wouldn't choose again. No explanation. No plan. Then count the dots.
You're not looking for what to cut. You're looking for what you never chose.
That number isn't failure. It's a signal.
What it looks like on the other side
Women who walk this with me tell me they stop feeling crazy. They can say "this is what I want" without feeling like it will cost them everything. They walk into the doctor's office and advocate for themselves. And they feel more like themselves than they have in years.
Not a new woman. Not a fixed one. Themselves.
Where to go from here
If the Alignment Audit lands, bring it into the Reclaim Room. We meet live every Monday, and this season we're walking the Pathway one shift at a time. $47 a month. Join the Reclaim Room →
And if what you're carrying is heavier than a worksheet can reach, that's what release work is for. Start with a conversation. Book a free discovery call →
You don't have to set it all down at once.
You just have to stop pretending it isn't heavy.
